Dr. Mahan received his MD degree from Northwestern University and did his residency training at the University of Minnesota where he returned to join the faculty. He moved to Florida in 1974 to be Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of Ambulatory Services for Women at the University of Florida and Director of the North Central Florida Maternal and Infant Care Program. By the age of 11, Hawes was writing and publishing his own newspaper,  The Flint Lake Driver,  which mostly chronicled the history and people of the area. After graduating from Plant High School in 1947, Hawes attended the University of Florida in Gainesville. While attending the university, Hawes was a campus correspondent for the  Tampa Daily Times  while working on his degree in journalism.","Upon completion of his degree, Hawes joined the  Times  staff in 1950. He then moved to the  Tampa Morning Tribune  two years later where he started as a police reporter. In 1960 he became the Sunday feature editor. In 1982 he was tasked with writing the  Tribune's  history and heritage page, an assignment that he would hold until his retirement in 2004.","Hawes'  Florida history page has earned him a devoted following among  Tribune  readers and has been awarded numerous awards and distinctions, including the  Tampa Historical Society's coveted D.B.
